Athletics US

Cincinnati Country Day School is a member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and competes in the Miami Valley Conference (MVC). The athletic program consists of 22 sports and over 50 teams at different levels. The school has a tradition of athletic excellence while at the same time having a “no-cut” policy that allows all students to participate. Over 90% of the student body will participate in at least one sports season during the year, and 70% of the senior class will participate in at least 8 seasons during their high school career.

Over the last 16 years, CCDS athletic teams have won 81 MVC Championships, 37 Sectional Championships, 33 District Championships, 8 Regional Championships and 6 State Championships. CCDS athletes have captured 8 Individual State Championships, 3 Youth National Championships, and 6 students have been recognized as All-Americans along with one Olympian.

Fall Coaches

CrossCountry

Merle Black has coached Cross Country and Track since 1988. His teams have won 7 Miami Valley Conference Championships and have finished as District Runner-Up 3 times. Over his career at CCDS, Coach Black has led a large number of male and female cross country runners to the State Championships. Coach Black has recently sent runners on to compete at Holy Cross, Oberlin, Wesleyan, and Williams College the last 5 years.

Coach Black is the Chair of the History Dept. at CCDS and one of the most respected faculty members.

Football

Matt Hanhold will start his first season as head of the football program.

Coach Hanhold served as the associate head coach of Colby College for the last 5 years. Coach Hanhold's responsibilities included running the defense, recruiting players, developing scouting reports, planning practices, and supervising team academics. In 2013 he led the Colby defense to a #1 ranking in the NESCAC and #9 in the NCAA.

Before Colby, Coach Hanhold worked as a wide receivers coach at Buffalo State College and a graduate assistant at Clarion University. Hanhold was a standout defensive lineman at Westminster College; he lettered three times and was named team captain during his senior year.

He graduated with a degree in political science and earned a Masters of Science degree while coaching at Clarion University.

Golf Boys

Greg Faulhaber became the head boys varsity golf coach in the fall of 2011. Coach Faulhaber has served as the JV Golf at Colerain High School (2004-2007) and CCDS (2008-2010). In his first season at the helm, Coach Faulhaber's team captured the Miami Valley Conference Championship and he was named MVC Coach of the Year. His 2012 Team was crowned District Champs and qualified for the State Tournament where they finished in 12th Place.

In addition to coaching golf, Coach Faulhaber teaches math in the Upper School and is the Chair of the Math Department. Coach Faulhaber's philosophy is the following: "When it comes to playing golf, I believe you should learn all you can about YOUR swing and use that knowledge at all times. Play your game, not someone else's. "

Golf Girls

Pat Dunn, a former Division I field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse player, has coached at CCDS since 2003. Before that she coached soccer and lacrosse in Connecticut.

Under her direction the girls varsity golf team qualified for the district tournament for the first time, had the first winning record in school history, and the first golfer (Kacie Bradfish) to qualify for the state tournament. The program is designed to encourage new golfers and develop the more advanced players. The team plays some of the finest courses in Cincinnati and competes citywide.

Established in 2001, the CCD girls varsity lacrosse team was one of the earliest programs in the state of Ohio. Able to compete with Division I schools, the team boasts both talent and sportsmanship. A number of CCDS graduates have gone on to play in college.

Coach Dunn is Chair of the English Department, and English Teacher and a College Counselor.

Soccer Boys

Greg Hirschauer is the Boys Varsity Soccer Coach at CCDS where his career record is 235-136-38. He has been a High School Soccer Coach for 25 years, including years as an Assistant Coach at Cincinnati Country Day and Turpin High School, where he was a member of the staff when Turpin was Ohio State Champion and Ohio Runner-up (1985). Greg has been Ohio Boys High School Coach of the Year (2000) and a 5-time SW Ohio Coach of the Year (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2003). Coach Hirschauer is a former college, professional and amateur men’s soccer player. Greg has played for the University of Dayton Soccer Club, was in the U.S. Marine Corps National Soccer pool, played/trained with the Dayton Dynamo (MPSL) and Cincinnati Cheetahs (USISL).

Soccer Girls

Theresa Hirschauer has been coaching at Cincinnati Country Day since the fall of 1990. Coach Hirschauer won her 300th career game in 2015. She has been named Coach of the Year—MVC, Southwest Ohio, and Private School Coach of the Year numerous times. The soccer program has won 7 Miami Valley Conference Championships, 8 Sectional Championships, and 5 District Championships.

A member of the Brown University Hall of Fame and the Buddy LaRosa’s High Schooll Sports Hall of Fame, Coach Hirschauer has earned numerous athletic honors during her career in soccer, basketball and softball. She was named one of the top athletes in Ivy League history.

Tennis Girls

Lynne Schneebeck, a 1988 graduate of Kenyon College, has served as the varsity tennis coach at Cincinnati Country Day since 1997. Schneebeck was the assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Colgate University from 1993 to 1996. Her playing career while at Kenyon is equally as impressive. She was a two-time team captain and was ranked individually as high as No. 21 in the nation amongst Division III players. She won six All-NCAC awards, was twice named NCAC Player of the Year, and won three NCAC titles. Schneebeck also made one individual and two team appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In 2008, she was inducted into the Kenyon Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

She has sent a Doubles Team to the State Tournament 12 times in her 16 years at CCD and a few singles players as well. The 2012 team won the MVC Championship for the first time in 20 years and sent 3 girls to the State Tournament.

Volleyball

Ashley Snell has been the varsity volleyball coach at CCDS since 2010. Coach Snell has guided the Indians to MVC Championships in 2010 and 2011. Ashley was the volleyball coach at Indianapolis Baptist School where she also served as the athletic director. After a move to Cincinnati, Ashley served as the Head Coach at Landmark Christian where she led the Eagles to conference and district championships and an appearance in the regional finals.

Ashley’s husband is Sonny Snell who serves as the Varsity Girls Basketball Assistant Coach and their sons Ashton and Bryce are students at CCDS.

Winter Coaches

Basketball Boys

Coach Greg Ross enters his third season as the boys varsity basketball coach at CCDS. In his first full year as head coach he led the Indians to a 17-7 record and a Miami Valley Conference Championship. He was named MVC Coach of the Year and was selected to be the Head Coach of the East team in the annual Cincinnati East vs. West All Star game. Year two he sported a 14-9 record.

Ross has been employed at Cincinnati Country Day School for the last 15 years, serving as associate athletic director and coaching football and basketball. Coach Ross has a true passion and love for the game of basketball and hopes that his players learn valuable lessons that will serve them well on and off the court.

Basketball Girls

John Snell started coaching Basketball at CCDS in 2005. His teams won 3 Miami Valley Conference Championships in a row (2010, 2011, 2012) and were crowned sectional champs in 2013. Coach Snell has accumulated over 200 wins as a varsity coach. Prior to coming to CCDS, he was the Head Coach at Landmark Christian where his teams won 2 Miami Valley Conference Championships and were Sectional Finalists.

Gymnastics

Steve Conner started his coaching career at CCDS in 1990.

He has been an assistant football and track coach and Head Gymnastic Coach. He became the Head Coach of the Girls Track Team in 2008 and took over the boys team in 2015. Coach Conner has helped lead the Girls Track team to dominance in the MVC with 17 league titles and 18 District Championships in his 22 years. He has coached 1 state Champion and dozens of state qualifiers over the years. In his first season as boys coach he led the team to an MVC and District Championship. In Gymnastics he has coached many quality teams and individuals that have fared well in the City Championships and at the District Meet.

Coach Conner is a Physical Education Teacher at CCDS.

Swimming

Coach Jana Westhoven became varsity coach in 2015. Swimming has been a major part of her life since high school where she swam competitively at Beavercreek High School and managed the Woodhaven Swim Club. While attending college, at Eastern Kentucky University, she served as a head lifeguard and swim instructor at Five Seasons Sports Club. She received her BS in environmental science from EKU in 2007.

Coach Westhoven has been part of the CCDS swim community since she arrived on campus in 2011, working first with the middle school team and joining the upper school swim staff in 2014.

The 2014-2015 season was one of the most successful in CCDS swimming history. Eleven total athletes made the state meet, Allie Wooden ’15 won the 100 and 200 freestyle, and the girls team took first place in the Miami Valley Conference and the Southern Ohio Swim League Championships.

Wrestling

Dan Wood has coached at CCDS since 2000. Over his career, Coach Wood has coached football, baseball and wrestling. As the Varsity Wrestling Coach he has instilled a mental toughness in his wrestlers and has continued to teach life skills for a very difficult sport.

Coach Wood is a Middle Science teacher and a leader of the school enviromental and recycling efforts.

Spring Coaches

Baseball

Tim Dunn has coached football and baseball at CCDS since 1987.

In football he has over 200 career victories. His teams have won 14 Miami Valley Conference Championships, have qualified for the OHSAA State Playoffs 14 times and have reached the State Final Four twice.

In baseball he won his 500th game in the spring of 2015. His teams have won 12 Miami Valley Conference Championships, 18 Sectional Championships, 12 District Championships, 3 Regional Championships and 2 State Championships.

Coach Dunn is Chair of the Science Department and teaches Biology.

Lacrosse Boys

Coach Frank Baverso will begin his first season as the Head Coach for the Country Day Boy Lacrosse Program. Coach Baverso, a native of Pittsburgh, has been coaching Lacrosse for the past nine year from the high school to college ranks.

Baverso earned his Master’s Degree from Kent State University and his Bachelor's Degree from Youngstown State University where he was a 4-year captain of the Lacrosse team. Baverso plans to help grow the game of lacrosse in the Cincinnati area.

Along with Country day Baverso is an assistant lacrosse coach with the Cincinnati Royals and The Mount St. Joesph University lacrosse programs. Baverso is also an Assistant with the Country Day football team.

Rowing

Coach Pedro Palacios has been the Rowing Coach at Cincinnati Country Day since 2008. He is the director of No Limits Rowing in Cincinnati. A former member of the Mexican National Rowing Team, Pedro has coached many college and high school rowers.Before coming to CCDS he coached the Clermont Rowing Club.

Coach Palacios has had multiple boats place in the top 10 at both Youth Nationals and Scholastic Nationals since he has been head coach at CCDS. He has sent many rowers on to compete at the college level.

Softball

Scott Scott Lemen took over as the Head Varsity Softball Coach in the Spring of 2013. Scott was an assistant coach for 8 seasons at both the junior high and high school levels. Coach Lemen was also a coach for the Bustos Ultimates for 4 years, which is a summer select team. He has been an assistant coach for the CCDS wrestling program for 4 years and has run the CCDS Invitational Tournaments for 8 years as well. He is the proud father of two CCDS Alums, Bradley Keiser '03 and Anna Lemen '10. He has been an active member of the community as a parent, coach, and booster member for 20 years.

Coach Lemen is the owner of Industrial Rope Supply, which has operations in both Cincinnati and St. Louis.

Tennis Boys

Coach Matt Dektas has been teaching tennis for over 17 years in the Cincinnati area. He became the Head Coach at CCDS in 2011. He has been voted “Greater Cincinnati Pro of the Year", Ohio "Pro of the Year", and Midwest "Junior Coach of the Year".

He is the co-founder of the EX Academy with Craig Boynton (current coach of John Isner). EX has over 100 Midwest ranked players, has produced over 4 million dollars in college scholarships, and now has 3 satellite programs in Chicago, Cleveland, and Dayton. Matt graduated from law school in 2002, but continued to teach because it is what he loves. He has led the Indians to a 3rd place finish in the State Tournament in 2012 and 2013 and in 2014 and 2015 his teams captured the OTCA State Championship.

The 2014 season was a very special year for the CCDS tennis program as Asher Hirsch was crowned State Champion in Singles (for the 2nd year in a row) and JJ Wolf was State Runner Up in Singles. Patrick Wildman and Kevin Yu took home the Doubles Championship.

The 2015 season was also special as the Indians were once again MVC Champs and the doubles team of Vishaal Nalagatla and Shaheel Mitra captured the State Championship.

Track
