Varsity Athletics

Merle Black has coached Cross Country and Track since 1988. His teams have won 7 Miami Valley Conference Championships and have finished as District Runner-Up 3 times. Over his career at CCDS, Coach Black has led a large number of male and female cross country runners to the State Championships. Coach Black has recently sent runners on to compete at Holy Cross, Oberlin, Wesleyan, and Williams College the last 5 years.

Coach Black is the Chair of the History Dept. at CCDS and one of the most respected faculty members.

Dennis Coyle is the new CCDS football coach and Athletic Director.

Prior to Country Day he was the Assistant Athletic Director and head varsity football coach at Savannah Country Day School.

Coyle has served in various coaching and teaching roles at other private schools including Roger Bacon High School, Purcell Marian, and Saint Xavier.

Brent Baumann is the head coach of the boys varsity golf team. Baumann’s golf career began in 2011 playing amateur events in the Florida State Golf Association. From there his golf game expanded to playing professionally in the Gateway and Moonlight tour in 2012 and 2013. He caddied for professional golfer Brad Schneider in 2013 during his tour qualifying school and has played head to head with PGA tour pro Michael Bradley.

Pat Dunn, a former Division I field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse player, has coached at CCDS since 2003. Before that she coached soccer and lacrosse in Connecticut.

Under her direction the girls varsity golf team qualified for the district tournament for the first time, had the first winning record in school history, and the first golfer (Kacie Bradfish) to qualify for the state tournament. The program is designed to encourage new golfers and develop the more advanced players. The team plays some of the finest courses in Cincinnati and competes citywide.

Established in 2001, the CCD girls varsity lacrosse team was one of the earliest programs in the state of Ohio. Able to compete with Division I schools, the team boasts both talent and sportsmanship. A number of CCDS graduates have gone on to play in college.

Coach Dunn is Chair of the English Department, and English Teacher and a College Counselor.

Greg Hirschauer is the Boys Varsity Soccer Head Coach at CCDS, entering his 29th season in 2020, CCDS career record 319-154-56. He has coached High School soccer for a total of 34 years, including two years as Assistant Coach at CCDS and three years at Turpin High School, where he was part of a staff that won a State Championship and 2 State Runners Up.

Greg has been National Coach of the Year finalist (2013), Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year (2013), Ohio Coach of the Year (2000, 2013) and 7-time SW Ohio Coach of the Year (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2013, 2014). Coach Hirschauer has been a high level club soccer coach and club Director for more than 25 years, amassing over 800 club soccer wins, several OSYSA State Cup and Regional Championships, three National Final 4 appearances. He was recently invited to the Advanced National/Premier Licensing Camp, where he was named Captain of the 1st team playing group and achieved his 14th coaching badge/license (Advanced National); he also holds an Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma.

Greg Hirschauer is a former amateur, college and professional soccer player (University of Dayton, All-US Marine Corps player pool, Cincinnati Cheetahs and Dayton Dynamo). He represented the USA in 1993 as part of Region II team that played 10 international matches (9-0-1) in Austria, Germany and Holland, including the Vorden Cup Championship in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Coach Hirschauer also served in the US Marine Corps Reserve after USMC PLC duty.

Greg was seated on the Ohio State Youth Soccer Board in January 2020 and serves on the Ohio Youth Soccer Finance Committee.

Theresa Hirschauer has been coaching at Cincinnati Country Day since the fall of 1990 and was coach of the 2018 CCDS State Soccer Champions. Coach Hirschauer won her 300th career game in 2015. She has been named Coach of the Year—MVC, Southwest Ohio, and Private School Coach of the Year numerous times. The soccer program has won 7 Miami Valley Conference Championships, 8 Sectional Championships, and 5 District Championships.

A member of the Brown University Hall of Fame and the Buddy LaRosa’s High Schooll Sports Hall of Fame, Coach Hirschauer has earned numerous athletic honors during her career in soccer, basketball and softball. She was named one of the top athletes in Ivy League history.

Kyle Scully '08 became the girls varsity tennis team head coach in 2018.

Scully has been a coach with the girls tennis team since 2014 and was a successful player during her time at Country Day. She won the OHSAA doubles championship in 2007. After Country Day she had a successful collegiate career at DePauw University. Scully is currently a highly rated singles player in the greater Cincinnati tennis community.

Heather Recker has been the head volleyball coach sinc 2016. Recker has been involved with volleyball since her high school career at Beechwood High School in Fort Mitchell, KY. She went on to play at Midway University where she was nationally ranked as one of the top outside hitters in the country. Recker also coaches with the 14U National Select team with the Northern Kentucky Junior Volleyball club.

Coach Greg Ross became the boys varsity basketball coach in 2015. In his first full year as head coach he led the Indians to a 17-7 record and a Miami Valley Conference Championship. He was named MVC Coach of the Year and was selected to be the Head Coach of the East team in the annual Cincinnati East vs. West All Star game. Year two he sported a 14-9 record.

Ross has been employed at Cincinnati Country Day School for the last 15 years, serving as associate athletic director and coaching football and basketball. Coach Ross has a true passion and love for the game of basketball and hopes that his players learn valuable lessons that will serve them well on and off the court.

John Snell started coaching Basketball at CCDS in 2005. His teams won 3 Miami Valley Conference Championships in a row (2010, 2011, 2012) and were crowned sectional champs in 2013. Coach Snell has accumulated over 200 wins as a varsity coach. Prior to coming to CCDS, he was the Head Coach at Landmark Christian where his teams won 2 Miami Valley Conference Championships and were Sectional Finalists.

Steve Conner started his coaching career at CCDS in 1990.

He has been an assistant football and track coach and Head Gymnastic Coach. He became the Head Coach of the Girls Track Team in 2008 and took over the boys team in 2015. Coach Conner has helped lead the Girls Track team to dominance in the MVC with 17 league titles and 18 District Championships in his 22 years. He has coached 1 state Champion and dozens of state qualifiers over the years. In his first season as boys coach he led the team to an MVC and District Championship. In Gymnastics he has coached many quality teams and individuals that have fared well in the City Championships and at the District Meet.

Coach Conner is a Physical Education Teacher at CCDS.

Amy Robillard and Nat Tracey-Miller will serve as the head coaches of the varsity swimming program. 

Coach Robillard and Tracey-Miller bring an energy and passion to their positions as they coach the team who will swim in the school’s new Levinson pool in the Leonard Family Athletic Center.  The coaching staff is excited to build on a tradition of excellence and a legacy of state champions:  Darryl Baker, Brad Bobbitt, Derek Scheer, David Osterhus, Karl Scheer, and Allie Wooden.

Amy Robillard has been on the Country Day coaching staff for the last two years.  A veteran of club swimming and a former college swimmer, Amy shared, “Swimming has been a part of my life since I dove in for my first summer league race when I was five. I never looked back and pursued competitive swimming through my college years at the University of Arizona. After graduating, I knew I was not done with swimming, so coaching was a natural progression. I have coached all age groups and abilities and have gained an even deeper passion for the sport. I am excited for what is to come with the CCDS swim team this season and for seasons to come.”

Nat Tracey Miller has coached the CCDS varsity swimming program for three seasons.  He is the upper and middle school librarian and also coaches the varsity cross country and junior varsity tennis teams. A Country Day alumnus, he is excited to guide the team in its new era in the Leonard Family Athletic Center.

Dan Wood has coached at CCDS since 2000. Over his career, Coach Wood has coached football, baseball and wrestling. As the Varsity Wrestling Coach he has instilled a mental toughness in his wrestlers and has continued to teach life skills for a very difficult sport.

Coach Wood is a Middle Science teacher and a leader of the school enviromental and recycling efforts.
