Early Childhood Students "Garden" with 8th Graders
Last spring the toddlers in the early childhood program at Country Day spent time with Mr. Johnston’s eighth grade Garden to Table elective class. The students enjoyed one-on-one instruction on how to prepare, plant, and water seeds.
The students filled the raised gardening bed with 15-year-old compost and planted seeds (green onion, carrots, tomatoes and lettuce). The children enjoyed painting markers for the veggies and were excited to find some worms when planting the markers in the garden bed.
Allowing children to explore and work in the yard has many rewards. Children want to be “useful” and take pride in helping with a garden. Planting seeds that take minimal time to germinate provides quick and satisfying results.
