Kourtni Hamilton (Paddock Hills) '22 recently competed in the National Schmidt Vocal Arts Competition at Miami University and won the Encouragement Award along with a $100 scholarship.
Kourtni competed alongside 23 contestants from the Tri-State area. She said she was inspired to enter the competition through her vocal work with Country Day choir teacher Trio Jeng.
"At the beginning of fall semester, learned that Kourtni was planning on majoring in music in college; I knew a competition like this would not only stand out on her resume but she would also benefit from the experience, so I recommended to her that she apply," said Jeng.
For the competition, Kourtni had to sing three musical pieces.
"To prepare for this event, I practiced with Mrs. Jeng four or five times during the week and on my own as well,” explained Hamilton. “I was fortunate enough to have a lesson with her other students the day before the competition, which was very helpful.”
The Schmidt Vocal Arts Foundation encourages aspiring young singers to pursue their passion in the vocal arts. High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors can participate with a teacher's recommendation.
