Country Day Writers Make History at Power of the Pen

Country Day Writers Make History at Power of the Pen

The 2026 Power of the Pen season has been a historic one for our middle school teams, including at the regional tournament, which took place on our campus.

“It is Country Day’s joy to host the Power of the Pen regional tournament and help cultivate and celebrate the creativity of young writers,” says Emily DiMatteo, eighth-grade English teacher and team coach.

This year, 30 schools participated in the tournament, with 61 writers competing in seventh grade and 68 student-writers in eighth grade. Two of Country Day’s seventh-grade student-writers, Alena Li (Sycamore Township) and Winston Douglas (Milford), placed first and second, respectively. Because medalists automatically advance, this is the first time in school history that a seventh-grade student has advanced to state; this year, both Winston and Alena will compete at Ashland University on May 18 for state medals. Alena Li also won a Best of Round award at districts for her story.

The season for this year’s eighth-grade team has also been exciting. “We saw several eighth graders who had challenging experiences at districts last year perform really well this year and get to compete in the regional tournament for the first time,” says DiMatteo. “It’s an exciting year to be a member of our Power of the Pens teams, and I’m so proud of the dedication and creativity showcased by all our writers.”
