Upper School Athletics

Cincinnati Country Day School is a member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and competes in the Miami Valley Conference (MVC). The athletic program consists of 22 sports and over 50 teams at different levels. The school has a tradition of athletic excellence while at the same time having a “no-cut” policy that allows all students to participate. Over 90% of the student body will participate in at least one sports season during the year, and 70% of the senior class will participate in at least 8 seasons during their high school career.

Over the last 16 years, CCDS athletic teams have won 81 MVC Championships, 37 Sectional Championships, 33 District Championships, 8 Regional Championships and 6 State Championships. CCDS athletes have captured 8 Individual State Championships, 3 Youth National Championships, and 6 students have been recognized as All-Americans along with one Olympian.

Fall Coaches

CrossCountry

Merle Black has coached Cross Country and Track since 1988. His teams have won 7 Miami Valley Conference Championships and have finished as District Runner-Up 3 times. Over his career at CCDS, Coach Black has led a large number of male and female cross country runners to the State Championships. Coach Black has recently sent runners on to compete at Holy Cross, Oberlin, Wesleyan, and Williams College the last 5 years.

Coach Black is the Chair of the History Dept. at CCDS and one of the most respected faculty members.

Football

Serving as football coach is Greg Ross, Associate Athletic Director, and varsity basketball coach. Ross has served as the CCDS head football coach and an assistant coach. He is starting his 16th year at Country Day.

Golf Boys


Brent Baumann is the new head coach of the boys varsity golf team. Baumann’s golf career began in 2011 playing amateur events in the Florida State Golf Association. From there his golf game expanded to playing professionally in the Gateway and Moonlight tour in 2012 and 2013. He caddied for professional golfer Brad Schneider in 2013 during his tour qualifying school and has played head to head with PGA tour pro Michael Bradley.

Golf Girls

Pat Dunn, a former Division I field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse player, has coached at CCDS since 2003. Before that she coached soccer and lacrosse in Connecticut.

Under her direction the girls varsity golf team qualified for the district tournament for the first time, had the first winning record in school history, and the first golfer (Kacie Bradfish) to qualify for the state tournament. The program is designed to encourage new golfers and develop the more advanced players. The team plays some of the finest courses in Cincinnati and competes citywide.

Established in 2001, the CCD girls varsity lacrosse team was one of the earliest programs in the state of Ohio. Able to compete with Division I schools, the team boasts both talent and sportsmanship. A number of CCDS graduates have gone on to play in college.

Coach Dunn is Chair of the English Department, and English Teacher and a College Counselor.

Soccer Boys

Greg Hirschauer is the Boys Varsity Soccer Coach at CCDS where his career record is 235-136-38. He has been a High School Soccer Coach for 25 years, including years as an Assistant Coach at Cincinnati Country Day and Turpin High School, where he was a member of the staff when Turpin was Ohio State Champion and Ohio Runner-up (1985). Greg has been Ohio Boys High School Coach of the Year (2000) and a 5-time SW Ohio Coach of the Year (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2003). Coach Hirschauer is a former college, professional and amateur men’s soccer player. Greg has played for the University of Dayton Soccer Club, was in the U.S. Marine Corps National Soccer pool, played/trained with the Dayton Dynamo (MPSL) and Cincinnati Cheetahs (USISL).

Soccer Girls

Theresa Hirschauer has been coaching at Cincinnati Country Day since the fall of 1990. Coach Hirschauer won her 300th career game in 2015. She has been named Coach of the Year—MVC, Southwest Ohio, and Private School Coach of the Year numerous times. The soccer program has won 7 Miami Valley Conference Championships, 8 Sectional Championships, and 5 District Championships.

A member of the Brown University Hall of Fame and the Buddy LaRosa’s High Schooll Sports Hall of Fame, Coach Hirschauer has earned numerous athletic honors during her career in soccer, basketball and softball. She was named one of the top athletes in Ivy League history.

Tennis Girls

Kyle Scully '08 is the new head coach of the girls varsity tennis team.

Scully has been a coach with the girls tennis team since 2014 and was a successful player during her time at Country Day. She won the OHSAA doubles championship in 2007. After Country Day she had a successful collegiate career at DePauw University. Scully is currently a highly rated singles player in the greater Cincinnati tennis community.


Volleyball

Heather Recker is the new head coach of the girls varsity volleyball team. Recker has been involved with volleyball since her high school career at Beechwood High School in Fort Mitchell, KY. She went on to play at Midway University where she was nationally ranked as one of the top outside hitters in the country. Recker also coaches with the 14U National Select team with the Northern Kentucky Junior Volleyball club.


Winter Coaches

Basketball Boys

Coach Greg Ross enters his third season as the boys varsity basketball coach at CCDS. In his first full year as head coach he led the Indians to a 17-7 record and a Miami Valley Conference Championship. He was named MVC Coach of the Year and was selected to be the Head Coach of the East team in the annual Cincinnati East vs. West All Star game. Year two he sported a 14-9 record.

Ross has been employed at Cincinnati Country Day School for the last 15 years, serving as associate athletic director and coaching football and basketball. Coach Ross has a true passion and love for the game of basketball and hopes that his players learn valuable lessons that will serve them well on and off the court.

Basketball Girls

John Snell started coaching Basketball at CCDS in 2005. His teams won 3 Miami Valley Conference Championships in a row (2010, 2011, 2012) and were crowned sectional champs in 2013. Coach Snell has accumulated over 200 wins as a varsity coach. Prior to coming to CCDS, he was the Head Coach at Landmark Christian where his teams won 2 Miami Valley Conference Championships and were Sectional Finalists.

Gymnastics

Steve Conner started his coaching career at CCDS in 1990.

He has been an assistant football and track coach and Head Gymnastic Coach. He became the Head Coach of the Girls Track Team in 2008 and took over the boys team in 2015. Coach Conner has helped lead the Girls Track team to dominance in the MVC with 17 league titles and 18 District Championships in his 22 years. He has coached 1 state Champion and dozens of state qualifiers over the years. In his first season as boys coach he led the team to an MVC and District Championship. In Gymnastics he has coached many quality teams and individuals that have fared well in the City Championships and at the District Meet.

Coach Conner is a Physical Education Teacher at CCDS.

Swimming

Derek Finn is the new head coach of the boys and girls varsity swim team. His coaching career started with the Mason Manta Rays in 2011 where he oversaw more than 200 junior Olympic qualifiers and more than 50 high school state qualifiers. In 2016, he left the Manta Rays to establish the swim program at Life Time Fitness. In a single year, he grew the program to more than 150 swimmers.

Before his coaching career, Finn was a varsity swimmer at the University of Cincinnati, graduating in 2010. While at UC, he specialized in the breast stroke.

Wrestling

Dan Wood has coached at CCDS since 2000. Over his career, Coach Wood has coached football, baseball and wrestling. As the Varsity Wrestling Coach he has instilled a mental toughness in his wrestlers and has continued to teach life skills for a very difficult sport.

Coach Wood is a Middle Science teacher and a leader of the school enviromental and recycling efforts.

Spring Coaches

Baseball

Asif Shahis the new Varsity baseball head coach.

Shah spent the spring season as an assistant coach on the varsity baseball staff. Before that he was the head coach at Finneytown high school and assistant at Turpin high school.

Coach Shah is an alumnus of the school having graduated in 2003. He was a key member of the 2001 Country Day State Championship team. After Country Day, he played Division 1 baseball at the University of Akron and Southeast Missouri State where he earned a degree in radio broadcasting. After college he played seven years of minor league baseball.

"Being able to lead the Country Day baseball program is the opportunity of a lifetime. I couldn't ask for a better place to teach the game I love. Country Day had a profound impact on me as an athlete and student. I look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence the baseball program has always been known for." said Coach Shah.

Coach Shah's vision for the program is to maintain a level of excellence on and off the field.

Lacrosse Boys

Cincinnati Country Day School has named Ryan Shearer as the new head coach of the boys varsity lacrosse team.

Coach Shearer is excited to jump back in the lacrosse coaching community after taking a couple years off to complete his master’s in special education. One of the original players who started the Little Miami High School program, Coach brings a passion for developing a program through solid skill foundation, teamwork, and love for the game. A history teacher at Shroder High School, Coach Shearer fits the philosophy of the CCDS athletic program by turning the lacrosse field into an outdoor classroom. Previously, Coach Shearer was on the staff at Walnut Hills High School for two years.

Assisting Coach Shearer will be Vosler Taylor who played lacrosse at Little Miami High School, as well. Currently, Coach Taylor works at the University of Cincinnati in the Campus Recreation Office. A coordinator of club and intramural sports, Vosler has a passion for building programs through outstanding organization and effective communication.

The new coaches will join returning assistant coach and CCDS alum Jack Victor ’13 who recently completed a successful football season working with many of Country Day’s young athletes. Stay tuned for details about upcoming winter play dates and a youth lacrosse clinic directed by Coach Shearer along with MS Coach AJ Froehlich.

Rowing

Coach Pedro Palacios has been the Rowing Coach at Cincinnati Country Day since 2008. He is the director of No Limits Rowing in Cincinnati. A former member of the Mexican National Rowing Team, Pedro has coached many college and high school rowers.Before coming to CCDS he coached the Clermont Rowing Club.

Coach Palacios has had multiple boats place in the top 10 at both Youth Nationals and Scholastic Nationals since he has been head coach at CCDS. He has sent many rowers on to compete at the college level.

Softball

Scott Lemen took over as the Head Varsity Softball Coach in the Spring of 2013. Scott was an assistant coach for 8 seasons at both the junior high and high school levels. Coach Lemen was also a coach for the Bustos Ultimates for 4 years, which is a summer select team. He has been an assistant coach for the CCDS wrestling program for 4 years and has run the CCDS Invitational Tournaments for 8 years as well. He is the proud father of two CCDS Alums, Bradley Keiser '03 and Anna Lemen '10. He has been an active member of the community as a parent, coach, and booster member for 20 years.

Coach Lemen is the owner of Industrial Rope Supply, which has operations in both Cincinnati and St. Louis.

Tennis Boys

Brian Schubert is the head coach of the boys varsity tennis team.

Since 2010, Schubert has been the Director of Junior Tennis at Five Seasons. During those years, he was the USPTA Junior Coach of the Year in 2016 named the Ohio Pro of the Year by the USPTA in 2014 and received Rookie of the Year honors in 2009. During his collegiate career, Schubert played at Xavier University where he captained their first ever NCAA tournament team. Coach Schubert has played a key role in growing the EX Academy Junior Program over the last couple of years.

Schubert has served as a Country Day assistant coach since 2012. During his tenure, the boys captured two team state championship titles and made five trips to the state final four. In the OHSAA State tournaments, CCDS has captured four D2 doubles state titles and three D2 singles championships.

Track
