Head of School Tony Jaccaci's remarks in presenting the Country Day Award:

As head of school, it's a great honor to present the school's highest award—the Country Day Award. The award recognizes the student who, in the opinion of the faculty, best represents those qualities for which we want Cincinnati Country Day School to be known. Each year, it's a challenge to name a single recipient since the school's graduating classes are full of bright, highly-motivated, and multi-talented students—students who tackle Country Day's challenging curriculum while also juggling athletic, artistic, and altruistic pursuits. In fact, it was so challenging this year to name one winner that two students were selected by the faculty to receive the school's most prestigious award.

It is with great pleasure that I present the 2020 Country Day Award to David Morales and Joely Virzi.

David Morales

When David joined Country Day as a fifth grader, we quickly realized what a truly multi-talented individual we had joining our ranks. From day one, David impressed his teachers, coaches, and classmates, distinguishing himself as an extremely bright, trustworthy, and hard-working young man with a precocious curiosity about all things scientific.

As a science buff, David's extra-curricular activities included impressive stints as a medal-winning member of the Science Olympiad team—David helped the team qualify for the state competition. He also worked lengthy hours in a lab as part of the highly selective TAP MD program at UC conducting hydrocephalus research and sectioning mouse brains. He has the talents, and the stomach, to become a world class neurosurgeon should his passions continue to steer him toward the field of medicine.

In addition to hyper-excelling in science, David was a member and captain of the cross country team. A gifted runner, David qualified for the regional championship last fall. His commitment to the sport is legendary, and I know that whenever I see a young man running down Given Road, nine times out of ten, it's David.

But even more impressive than David's exceptional intellect is his humility, his concern for others, and his determination to make a difference. And no doubt, he will. For eight years David brought out the best is us, and now Columbia will benefit from David's manifold gifts.

Congratulations, David.

Joely Virzi

Joely joined Country Day as a freshman and has been dazzling her teachers and coaches ever since. The list of adjectives used to capture Joely's talents is too lengthy to detail, but it includes the superlatives you'd expect—strongest, fastest, kindest, smartest. But Joely is much more than her perfect transcript, which for the record does not include one A minus despite a course load of 13½ honors classes. What Joely's teachers value is that she doesn't strive for the perfect grade, she strives for understanding. She's a true learner at heart.

Joely's been a standout on student council, making sure all manner of tasks were attended to with her signature smile and contagious laughter. She prefers to avoid the spotlight and work quietly in the background, but when Joely is involved, it's hard not to notice the difference since she gives nothing but her best to anything she undertakes.

Joely also personifies the core virtues of Country Day. As one teacher put it, Joely's classmates know they've crossed a line if they're called out by a teacher or Joely, and that frankly, being called out by Joely is way worse.

And who among will ever forget Joely's brilliance on the soccer field. Her technique and teamwork helped guide the team to back-back state titles. All in a day's work for Joely. And Country Day is deeply grateful she shared her talents with us.

Congratulations, Joely.
