Janning '15 finalist for Flyer Pitch Competition at UD

Spencer Janning '15 is a finalist for the University of Dayton Flyer Pitch competition, which takes place March 24. His is one of five teams competing for $50,000 in startup money, but his team is guaranteed $5,000 for being a finalist. Teams from China and Vietnam are also competing.

His team designed the Freedom of Movement Leg Abductor in his Intro to Engineering course at the University of Dayton in his freshman year. The device is designed to prevent crossover in cerebral palsy patients They often experience motor spasms in their legs, and when they occur during the night, patients will thrash around. As a result their legs will get crossed over, which can be problematic for circulation and getting to the bathroom.

Janning created the leg abductor, which straps onto the legs and sits on the thigh. It allows movement – lateral, forward and backward - but prevents crossover. He received a patent for the leg abductor this winter. Janning brought the device to CCDS in January, when he showed it to seniors attending Senior Seminar.

Congratulations, Spencer!
