Our NATURE-BASED SCHOOL Programs.
Cincinnati Country Day School is nestled in a pastoral setting. Since its founding in 1926, the 62-acre campus has played an important part in fulfilling CCDS’s mission. Today, our talented teachers nurture curiosity in the natural world, engage students in real-world research on campus, and develop environmentally literate citizens.
Our environmental commitment includes a full-time director of outdoor education, an endowed environmental council, an environmental education center and several partnerships with regional environmental organizations.
Students school-wide, from 18-months through grade 12, enjoy the outdoors as part of their education. Open-ended discovery of the natural world begins in our early childhood program, is bridged by a rich experiential programming through Middle School and is continued as a source of camaraderie and social action in the Upper School.
Lower School Environmental commitment
Lower School celebrates the innate connection with nature that our students age 18 months through grade 4 possess. Our teachers utilize our 62-acre campus as a living laboratory and through frequent outdoor experience, our students develop natural world project-based learning projects.
Environmental projects in the lower school include:
- Lifer tree planting
- Maple sugaring
- Chicken keeping
- CCDS growing gardens
- Trout in the classroom
Middle School Environmental commitment
Middle School has developed an environmental program for students in grades 5-8 that expands from experiential learning to regional conservation and social action. This program - led by the middle school science team - introduces and connects indoor classroom learning with outdoor classroom experiences throughout our campus as well as the local community.
Environmental projects in the middle school include:
- La Soupe growing garden
- Mason Bee nesting sites
- Invasive plant removal and forest restoration
- Native plant conservation research
- Purple Martin colony
Upper School Environmental Commitment
Upper School offers an environmental program for student in grades 9-12 that stretches into regional and global action. This program - led by the upper school science department - introduces and connects indoor classroom learning with outdoor experiences as well as both local and global opportunities.
Environmental projects in the upper school include:
- Conservation research
- Water conservation
- Waste stream reduction
- Pollinator habitat Initiative (Collaborative with Cincinnati Nature Center, Northern Kentucky University and Boone Country Conservation District)
All-School and Cross-Divisional Environmental Initiatives
CCDS is exceptional, in part, because of the connections and bonds that develop among faculty, students, alumni, and friends. Many environmental initiatives and projects take place on our 62-acre campus that involve children of all ages, adults, community members, institutional partners, and alumni. These opportunities are wonderful learning experiences in the areas of life cycles, conservation, and sustainability.
