Campus

An aerial view of CCDS campus.

Our 60-acre campus provides numerous natural spaces and opportunities for our well-established outdoor program. Since the school's founding in 1926, our campus has played an important part in fulfilling CCDS’s mission. The founders were committed to outdoor education, and in particular, the study of nature. Student devoted the afternoons to outdoor play and sports or nature study in the fields and woodlands. Today, on a campus located away from major thoroughfares, traffic jams, and crowded buildings, our talented teachers nurture curiosity in the natural world, engage students in real-world research on campus, and develop environmentally literate citizens. As the impact of technology continues to shape the world in which we live, our school is committed to instilling a culture of purposeful connection to the natural world through education, partnerships, action, and self-assessment that empower and inspire our community members to be stewards of our environment. Our environmental commitment includes a full-time director of outdoor education, an endowed environmental council, an environmental education center and several partnerships with regional environmental organizations.

Additionally, our campus is more than large enough to support all our students on the same campus – a benefit for families, eliminating the need to be at multiple locations. The open campus provides not only a setting for academic experience growth and development opportunities but also those for exploration and community-building, including viewing the solar eclipse together as a community, walking woodland trails, bird watching, reading in an Adirondack chair, lounging in a hammock, hosting class campouts and movie nights, or stargazing from the second largest telescope in Cincinnati. Every day brings new adventures.

A joyful environment.

All-School and Cross-Divisional Environmental Initiatives

CCDS is exceptional, in part, because of the connections and bonds that develop among faculty, students, alumni, and friends. Many environmental initiatives and projects take place on our 60-acre campus that involve children of all ages, adults, community members, institutional partners, and alumni.  These opportunities are wonderful learning experiences in the areas of life cycles, conservation, and sustainability. All-school projects have included:

  • LED light installation
  • GoZero compost partnership
  • Pollinator project
  • Snack bag terra cycle
  • Water filling stations
  • Campus beautification
  • Arboretum installation
  • Environmental conservation lectures and discussions
