Character and Competencies

Upper School students pose for a photo with packaged meals that will be donated to the less fortunate.

A Country Day student is provided with an academically enriched experience with opportunities to explore many things like the arts, athletics, and service outside of the classroom. But woven into the fabric of every aspect of a Country Day education is character.

We educate the moral and ethical leaders for the next generation – students who will “do the right thing even when no one is watching.” It’s right there in our mission: “…kindle the potential in others and better a dynamic world.” Students are surrounded by caring adults and classmates who come from all walks of life – ethically, social-economically geographically, and philosophically. This diversity creates a community of inclusivity, learning, and acceptance, which inspires students to give back through community service, outreach programs, and simply by being good citizens of the world.

Ingrained in the life of the school are our five character virtues: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Compassion, Courage, which are publicly posted and talked about frequently. They are also included in our educational lessons and emphasized during sporting events, fields trips, assemblies, and everyday moments. A Country Day education provides a tremendous, well-rounded foundation for the future of every student, and a key component of that is character.

Opportunities for personal growth and development include the Lower School House program and Etiquette Club; Middle School ROX (Ruling Our eXperiences) and Leadership Academy; and Upper School Peer Mentoring, the student-led Diversity Conference, Service Learning Day, reading buddies, and Students Helping Students.

Virtue in Action

  • Service learning means using our education to make a difference in our community—at school, in the surrounding area, and around the world. We strive to provide service to people, animals, and the environment, and hope to foster a spirit of respect and willingness to serve.
